Tibetan Texts
Download
In this section we have three units of texts. The first two consists of 22 short children's stories. These texts provide good material for those learning to read Tibetan. The third unit is also made up of short texts, but some of them are somewhat more difficult than the texts in the Beginner units. All texts (except the first one) were provided to us by Buchung-la in India, and we want to thank him here for this very valued contribution to the site.
First, try to read each text without looking at the translations. If you have a dictionary you might consider translating it yourself and then compare with our translation. Each text will eventually be translated word by word, making it easier for beginners to identify each word within the text. There is also a full translation and grammar analysis for some texts.
You can download the sound files to your computer or play them online. Try to listen to
the recordings without looking at the text;
this will help you to get used to the sounds of Tibetan.
You can download each text section in one file, using the links above. We have them in the TibetDoc/TibetD format using the TibetanMachineWeb font, and in MS-Word using the Bod-Yig font.
We prefer the TibetDoc format for a number of reasons. First of all the font is much better. TibetDoc is designed for Tibetan word processing and therefore it just works better than MS-Word. And last, but not least, if you have the Illuminator or any other PKTC's dictionary, you can look up words by simply highlighting them in the text and then getting the translation with a mouse click.
You can also visit PKTC's Tibetan Texts page for free Dharma texts in the TibetDoc format.
