The New English - Tibetan Dictionary

Summary

This English - Tibetan dictionary was created with native Tibetan students in mind. It has over 60,000 words and 350 illustrations, and there are more than 3000 new Tibetan scientific and technical terms included.

Review

I actually gave away my copy when I was in India, so this will be very short.

This dictionary is not to be confused with another dictionary, by Norbu Chopel, that bears the same name.

This dictionary is only available in hard cover, and the size is larger than your average book. The font is excellent; both size and print quality are very good.

Most entries have just the basic translation. Some examples of usage are given, but not many details or cultural explanations can be found here. There are a number of scientific and modern words included, which is good for the student of the modern language. The illustrations do not add much for us foreigners; those are nice for the native Tibetan students though.

If I were to choose between this dictionary and the "English Tibetan Dictionary of Modern Tibetan", I would not pick this one. The other one is more suited for foreigners.

I got my copy from Snow Lion, but they don't seem to not carry it anymore. Actually I do not know of any store outside of India that sells this dictionary.
